Newspapers and Periodicals

Using this system, you can search for and, if desired, order articles about Rotterdam and the surrounding area from daily and weekly newspapers dating from July 1993 to December 2009.

Newspapers from 1947 to July 1993 are documented on microfiche and these can be viewed in the reading room of the Rotterdam Municipal Archives.

The following periodicals have been documented.

  • Daily newspapers: NRC/Handelsblad, Rotterdams Dagblad, Algemeen Dagblad, Trouw (up to and including 2000). With the exception of newspapers in A2 format, you may order copies of these.
  • Weekly newspapers: Scheepvaartkrant, Nieuwsblad Transport, Europoort Kringen, (all) issues of Havenloods and articles concerning Rotterdam that have been published in national weekly newspapers.

Articles may only be examined in the reading room at the Rotterdam Municipal Archives (or in any other documentation centre where the newspaper or periodical concerned is available). Copies of daily newspapers can be provided both on paper and in digitised format.

Digital Newspapers

In addition to the periodicals documentation system, the municipal archive also has digital copies available of the Rotterdamsch Nieuwsblad (1929-1945) and De Heraut. The latter is a weekly newspaper distributed across Lansingerland (Berkel en Rodenrijs, Bergschenhoek and Bleiswijk). Editions from years 1999-2002 have been digitised and made searchable.

Copies of the Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant 1910-1945 may be consulted at the National Library of the Netherlands: Historical newspapers in pictures.

Searching Newspapers and Periodicals

Searching through the library is only possible in the Dutch language.
